Satoshi Hashimoto: Everything and others

The weight scale placed in the gallery is not an object of your vision. Conversely, that scale objectifies your mass. The mass of the Earth is 5.972 x 10^24kg. Your body weight is included in the value. But the proportion is extremely low. The world is almost entirely composed of things other than you. But we actually perceive the world in more complex way.
What percentage of the weather forecast whose rainfall probability is 100% can go wrong? The space of probability and statistics consists of supposing a whole (Ω) and dividing it. However, there are “others” which always exist and are not included in the “everything.” Hashimoto has conducted diverse activities that extend beyond existing frameworks of art. Outside of the gallery space, he buried himself on a river bank, wet his pants at lectures, and ate park pigeons. But he is not an outsider of the art world. He also conducted research on the authorized history of art from Leonardo da Vinci to Robert Smithson and exhibited the results at galleries and museums. But he is not an insider, either. He explores the other side of the distinctive system composed of the dichotomy of the outside/inside.

The viewer’s expectations on his artwork are frequently unfulfilled. There is no “artwork” there, a display of the creative act of the artist or its outcome. He brings disorder to the distinctive system of artist/artwork/viewer that makes the experience surrounding art static, although it was originally indeterminate. A hammer or paint sprays placed with the instructions of “You can hammer yourself” or “You can paint yourself” are not constative objects, but performative prompters of the viewer’s acts. The viewers become the subject as well as object of the acts such as hammering or painting. The viewers, performers in place of the artist, frequently lose their grasp on the subject of their acts, if the focus is on themselves or the artist who gave them the instructions. In “Arbitrary Decisions and Prejudices: I Divide the Audience,” viewers are lined up in front of the artist and evaluated only through their appearance. Here, the role of the artist and viewer is interchanged. The art viewer of the modern age is forced to perform a role of a critic who correctly appraises an artist through his/her artwork. By liberating the artist, artwork, and viewer from the role, the experience becomes insecure. He throws everything into a hole.

Outline

Showcasing young artists who represent new trends in contemporary art in Japan, “MOT Annual” is a consecutive series of group exhibitions launched in 1999, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Co-curated by ARTISTS’ GUILD, an artist-led organization that develops experimental projects to improve the environments of artistic expression, this exhibition marks the MOT Annual’s 14th installment and is presented in a somewhat different format from its predecessors.

Surveying contemporary society, while everyone can now make their voice heard freely through the Internet, there is also growing intolerance against opinions that differ from the values of the majority. Various frictions created by this contortion are evident, and sites of creative expression are no exception. Under such circumstances, what kind of impact on society and people can artistic expression and action make by challenging existing sets of values and social norms, and raising radical questions?

Through in-depth discussions, ARTISTS’ GUILD and the museum have developed every aspect of the exhibition, from theme to structure. With artworks created by both Japanese and international artists, live performances, talks and a book publication, the project poses various questions concerning conditions of artistic expressions and social situations today. Recognizing the significance of acts of vocalization without fear of saying improper things, as the title “Loose Lips Save Ships” suggests, the exhibition aims to build a platform where multiple interpretations based on different perspectives intersect with one another.

About ARTISTS’ GUILD

ARTISTS’ GUILD (AG) is a form of social experiment initiated by artists to explore new possibilities for supporting art.
In 2009, AG launched a video equipment sharing system with the aim of reducing the financial burden for individual artists to make artworks and exhibitions. In 2013, AG established AG Productions LLC, an incorporated organization that engages in art praxis with a different approach to that of artists working individually by undertaking video documentation of exhibitions and related events.

At this year’s Art Fair Tokyo, AOYAMA | MEGURO and GALLERY KOCHUTEN are pleased to announce the full-fledged introduction of the photographic works by Mitsutoshi Hanaga (1933-1999),

Since the 1960s, Hanaga had actively documented Butoh, Little Theater Movement, avant-garde artists’ happenings and events, and even extended to social issues such as kogai (pollution), the Japanese student movement and commune activities. The photographs he left behind are more than 10,000 stills of historical facts which later became legendary.

Throughout his life, Hanaga had always gone out to the site and had become the firsthand witness by working closely with the creators, and many of his photographic records are regarded today as valuable documents, and they are now beginning to be exhibited in museums.

While this exhibition will showcase approximately 600 items including many unpublished works, it will also serve as a place to survey their contents.
