As a contemporary artist and the founder of DOMMUNE, Naohiro Ukawa works across video art, graphic design, VJ performance, writing, and university teaching. He has consistently traversed the boundaries between fine art and popular culture, generating new forms of cultural practice as a self-described “MEDIA THERAPIST.”
Ukawa is also recognized as the pioneer of VJ culture in Japan, having begun his activities in 1987.
In March 2010, he independently launched DOMMUNE, a live-streaming studio and channel that has since become a pioneering platform for contemporary culture. Over its 16 years of operation, DOMMUNE has broadcast more than 7,000 programs and reached a cumulative audience of over 300 million viewers. Ukawa positions the entire process of filming, streaming, and archiving online broadcasts as a form of contemporary art.
Beyond DOMMUNE, he has organized fundraising events in support of recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake and has established more than 15 satellite studios in Japan and abroad in conjunction with international art festivals and exhibitions.
In November 2019, marking DOMMUNE’s 10th anniversary, the studio relocated to the ninth floor of Shibuya PARCO, where it evolved into SUPER DOMMUNE, integrating cutting-edge technologies into its experimental broadcasting platform.
In 2023, Ukawa held the solo exhibition “Naohiro Ukawa: FINAL MEDIA THERAPIST @DOMMUNE” at the Nerima Art Museum, presenting works that reconsider authorship and the act of drawing in the age of generative AI.
He received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize (71st Art Encouragement Prizes) in 2021.

Born in Tokyo in 1973 Tokyo and currently lives there. Graduated from Tama Art University(department of printmaking). He makes paper sculptures with pencil frottage. He uses guns and knives as motifs however, the fact that these heavy motifs are supported by “pencil and paper” which are very thin and weak is making a strong contrast.
