Born in 1965 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has lived in Vancouver, Canada and is now based in Los Angeles. Macdonald has produced a range of works that conjure the modern problem of the individual vs. the surrounding social structure: a two-channel video installation depicting 35 LP records rotating on turntables, sourced from the BBC archives and containing fake sound effects used for radio programs; a bronze sculpture of a palm tree shadow; several glacier drawings; a very long 6 minute video of a snail crawling across some sand. A resonant frequency is struck between all these works as Macdonald brings together divergent forms of sonic and reproductive imaging techniques, inducing a sense of bottomless expansion that never seems to reach its limit.
