At this year’s Art Fair Tokyo, AOYAMA | MEGURO and GALLERY KOCHUTEN are pleased to announce the full-fledged introduction of the photographic works by Mitsutoshi Hanaga (1933-1999),
Since the 1960s, Hanaga had actively documented Butoh, Little Theater Movement, avant-garde artists’ happenings and events, and even extended to social issues such as kogai (pollution), the Japanese student movement and commune activities. The photographs he left behind are more than 10,000 stills of historical facts which later became legendary.
Throughout his life, Hanaga had always gone out to the site and had become the firsthand witness by working closely with the creators, and many of his photographic records are regarded today as valuable documents, and they are now beginning to be exhibited in museums.
While this exhibition will showcase approximately 600 items including many unpublished works, it will also serve as a place to survey their contents.
