The School of Nature and Principle is an ensemble of works speculating on the relationship between metaphysics and various aspects of contemporary society. The exhibition also addresses, partly through the way it was conceived, the gradual evolution (or deterioration) of highly organized thought systems from their initial implementation to their eventual adaptation to society and actual human behavior. Taking Neo-Confucianism as his departure point (specifically the branch known as the School of Nature and Principle, which proposes a way of relating to and behaving in the world), curator Emiliano Valdes has assembled an international group of artists whose work explores the validity of non-rational knowledge, our relation to the natural world and technology, and simply what it means to be alive today.

EFA Project Space is grateful to the Asia Art Archive in America and the Hunter College Department of Art and Art History for their help in facilitating this exhibition.

Chosil Kil,
London-based artist Chosil Kil continues her exploration of the liminal space between interior and exterior; material and immaterial; object and performance. These binaries are considered through references to the artist’s own body, with works such as helium-filled balloons or canvases made of leather/lambskin purposefully hung at the artist’s height. These floating objects and wall-works double as bodies in space that beckon to the viewer, insisting their presence be acknowledged. The artist is also keenly aware of how objects occupy and manipulate space and sound, playing with concepts of volume and resonance.

Summary

In her first U.S. museum solo show, London-based artist Chosil Kil continues her exploration of the liminal space between interior and exterior; material and immaterial; object and performance. These binaries are considered through references to the artist’s own body, with works such as helium-filled balloons or canvases made of leather/lambskin purposefully hung at the artist’s height. These floating objects and wall works double as bodies in space that beckon to the viewer, insisting their presence be acknowledged. The artist is also keenly aware of how objects occupy and manipulate space and sound, playing with concepts of volume and resonance.

For Concentrations 58: Chosil Kil, the artist will present a new site-specific installation in the DMA’s Stoffel Quadrant gallery including a group of new wall works. Off-site performances are planned and will be announced at a later date.  The DMA’s Concentrations series began in 1981 and presents project-based solo exhibitions by international emerging artists.

There is a bus stop. Somewhere in Germany. Just outside of nursing home for people with Alzheimer and dementia. Staff finds missing patients there. They are waiting for buses to go back. Except it is not a real bus stop. A make believe. Replica. Placebo. “A medicine or procedure prescribed for the psychological benefit to the patient rather than for any physiological effect.” A driving instructor would tell you that the car you are learning to drive has to become the part of you. You don’t think about moving your legs when you walk, do you? She asks. And she answers her question too. [Nice one] You just move your legs. Just like that. Left leg forward then move your right leg forward. Left and right. Left and right. Left. Right. Left. Right. I remember driving being tiring. Being conscious of the constant stream, the next moves. Left. Right. Left then right. I am no longer aware of this series of actions. Have I become the part of the machine? Conceptually it is wrong. Very wrong. That is why Google glasses are so wrong. Still I cannot help myself peeping through the venetian blinds of my studio. Looking at my car parked outside. Just checking to see if it is alright. Alright from what, though. It is a sunny day. Very sunny. Let’s put some UV cream. I see a traffic warden walks by checking all the cars on the street. I look at him looking at my car. Now I am counting possibilities.
