Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ seminal work “Untitled (Perfect Lovers)” consists of two circular clocks placed next to one another, proceeding at exactly the same speed. They are perfect lovers since they follow the same exact movement. I gave the work a second title “Untitled (Rio/Tokyo).” The 2016 Olympics held in Rio and the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo. Japan and Brazil lie exactly on opposite sides of the Earth, thus making the two countries as far apart as possible. Their time difference is 12 hours, so that the two clocks, which seem to be indicating the same time, are actually pointing at two different times, one in the day and the other in the night. If one clock represents a half-sphere, the two of them together presents a perfect sphere.

When the sun rises in Japan and it is noon, it is midnight in Brazil on the other side of the planet. The flags of the two countries correspond to this fact. The Japanese flag depicts a sun with a red circle on a white background, whereas the Brazilian flag has a circle of the night sky in the middle. When the two flags of the same size are superimposed, the night sky circle covers the red one, thus forming a total eclipse. Istanbul came in second place in the competition for 2020 Olympics. This will be the second Olympics in Tokyo, but had Istanbul been selected, it would have been the first Olympic in a Muslim country. The flag of Turkey shows a white crescent moon against a red background. When the Japanese flag showing a red circle against a white background is placed next to it, the crescent moon appears like a lunar eclipse.

25 Cent Coin (Washington): Size of eyeball

In the human body, the eyeball is the organ most used to measure objects. In a sense, the ultimate blind spot for observation is the eyeball, the tool of observation. More than half of the eyeball is hidden, buried in the face. How big is the actual size of an eyeball? Many might imagine something similar to a golf ball (43 mm). Compared to other body parts, eyeballs do not differ so greatly in size between individuals, and those of an adult are about 23-24mm in diameter. This is about the same size as a 25 cent coin, the most used coin in the US.

We cannot obtain an overview of the Earth while standing on it, and the size of the planet (12756274m in diameter) far surpassing the scale of humans cannot be grasped as a whole through the accumulation of fragments. When the Earth, which is literally the biggest thing in the whole planet, is compressed into the size of a penny, the smallest unit of American dollar (19mm in diameter), it turns into a black hole. This would be a size that can be pinched with fingers inside a pocket.

The iris of the eye on a mirror within arms reach is the same size as the sun and the moon seen from the earth.
Even though the actual size of the Sun is about 400 times more that of the Moon (27000000 times more in mass), they look almost the same when observed from the Earth (this is what allows total eclipse to happen). Things within the visual field constantly change their size depending on their distance to the eye (whereas touch which erases the distance always deals with real size). The diameter of the pupil is around 11-12mm, which is half that of the eyeball. When one stands in front of a mirror at a distance of a stretched arm, the size of the pupil reflected is exactly the same as that of the Sun and the Moon seen from the Earth (the hole of Japanese 5 Yen coin when held with a stretched arm is the same size as the Sun and the Moon.)
